So, what’s the difference between all the colours? This is a question we get asked quite often, and we’d like to answer this just for you.
Most persons would be surprised to know that freshly harvested Sea Moss is not the same colour as dried raw Sea Moss. Come with us, as we walk you through the process from beginning to end. On the marine protected shores of Canouan Island, our ethically harvested Eucheuma Cottonii Sea Moss grows in a variety of distinctive natural hues; ranging from light brown, brown, reddish brown and bright green.
During the drying process, however, it is normal for these hues to naturally change. The bright green turns to darker shades of greens to grey, the reddish brown turns into a darker shade of purple and the brown to light brown turns into a pink to light purple hue. No chemicals, dyes, preservatives or additives are ever added at any stage.
The Green or Purple is obtained by being hung intentionally in the shade and left to air dry for about 4-5 days. By way of this process, we are able to preserve the natural pigments, phytonutrients and thus, the full potential of its benefits.
The Gold is obtained by using any of the natural colours and intentionally bleaching it by using sunlight. This sun bleaching process dissolves the natural pigments and changes the Sea Moss to a whitish colour. Again, no chemicals, dyes, preservatives or additives are added. The Sea Moss is then placed in direct sunlight and dried for 3-4 days using only suns solar rays. The colour ends up being a beautiful golden hue.
Benefits of Gold Sea moss
Golden sea moss, has the most mild flavour and ocean scent. Though it loses the benefits of the natural purple or green pigments due to the sun bleaching process; it still retains all the vitamins and minerals that is common in all Sea Moss varieties. It contains beta cryptothanxin, which supports intracellular communication. Beta-cryptoxanthin is a precursor of vitamin A, which is an essential nutrient needed for eyesight, growth, development and immune response. If you are just starting out, we recommend you begin with taking our Gold Sea Moss.
Benefits of Purple Sea moss
Purple sea moss has a stronger flavor and is high in antioxidants called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are responsible for the natural colours such as red, pink and purple, which is found in sea moss. Anthocyanins are also present in blue fruits and vegetables. These phytonutrients, like ascorbic acid, tocopherols, polyphenolic compounds, and terpenoids; are powerful antioxidants that fight against free radical that lead to cell damage in the body and decreases your chances of the formation of cancerous tumours. Plus they may delay cellular aging! Anthocyanins may lower blood pressure, the risk of cardiovascular disease and may improve visual acuity. Anthocyanins are also reported to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity. This is especially great for persons who may suffer from auto-immune diseases that trigger inflammation in the body and need something for the pain. A reduction in inflammation means a reduction in pain.
Benefits of Green Sea moss
Green sea moss has a strong flavor profile and is rich in chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is chemically similar to hemoglobin, a protein that is essential in red blood cells as it carries oxygen around a person’s body. It may also be beneficial in promoting liver health. Green Sea Moss is known to boost energy levels, improve overall health, help the body fight illness, promote weight loss, lower inflammation in the body, heal skin damage, and neutralizes toxins in the body. Green sea moss is rarer than Gold and Purple sea moss due to its longer growth cycle.
Full Spectrum Sea moss
Full Spectrum Sea Moss is dried using a combination of the shade & sun and contains a variety of all the Sea Moss colours. Though potent, the flavour profile and ocean smell is milder than that of the Green and Purple. Consuming Full spectrum is a great way to combine and diversify the maximum amount of nutrition, iodine content, antioxidant content, phytonutrient content, and chlorophyll content.
Keep in mind that, although the nutritional content may vary, all the colours may contain many of the same nutrients
